As the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework promises a paradigm shift in how learners learn and facilitators teach, glaring gaps remain in how teachers are trained to ensure optimum success. These gaps, ranging from inadequate reference materials to constrained budgets, have made existing teacher training initiatives insufficient for educators in modern classrooms. Thus, the CBC/CBE Retooling for the Digital Teacher – Nairobi Edition was Learnademy’s commitment to achieving quality education by equipping teachers with the latest skills, knowledge, and digital tools aligned with the Competency-Based Education (CBE), fostering digital teaching practices, and promoting effective professional development.

This hybrid program—both virtual and in-person—brought together over 50 educators with a shared goal: enhancing their proficiency in the CBE framework. Beyond curriculum training, participants explored inclusivity in the classroom, mental wellness for teachers, and first aid and emergency preparedness strategies.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Muliande, founder and CEO of Learnademy, emphasized, “Technology is an enabler, not a replacement for teachers in classrooms.” His statement set the mood for the day, demonstrating how education technology (EdTech) complements teacher expertise, making lessons more engaging, interactive, and personalized while supporting learner engagement.

Recognizing that curriculum training alone is insufficient for modern classrooms, Learnademy adopted a 360° training approach by onboarding partners: The QuickFix Learning Hub, Youth Initiative Development Programme (YIDP), and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), who contributed significantly to a transformative professional development experience for educators and stakeholders.

Through this structured, month-long program, the participants completed the CBC online masterclass on Learnademy, attended multiple virtual sessions, and the in-person workshop. These combined expert insights, interactive exercises, and collaborative discussions to equip teachers with the skills, tools, and inspiration needed to excel in modern classrooms. Training emphasized pedagogy, inclusion, teacher wellbeing, and emergency preparedness.

Mr. Zephania Mucheria, a seasoned CBC/CBE trainer, guided participants through learner-centred teaching strategies, effective lesson delivery, and innovative methods for engaging diverse learners. Educators reflected on practices, exchanged ideas, and explored approaches to meet diverse learner needs. Collaborative breakout sessions allowed teachers to share experiences, brainstorm solutions, and develop practical strategies. Peer learning emphasized learner engagement, ensuring every student feels valued and empowered to thrive academically and socially. 

With guidance from NCPWD, educators explored approaches to adapt lessons for learners with diverse abilities. Sessions focused on removing barriers to learning, accommodating different learning styles, and creating supportive classroom environments, reinforcing that inclusion is a critical component of effective teaching.

Mr. Collince Dundo, Co-founder and CEO of YIDP, highlighted the importance of digital and mental wellness for educators as a catalyst for improved learning outcomes. He provided strategies to manage workloads, reduce stress, balance responsibilities, and maintain teacher wellbeing, helping teachers prevent burnout while modelling positive behaviours.

“Teachers and school leaders must be prepared for emergencies within the school environment. Simple measures such as posting emergency numbers on notice boards, maintaining first aid kits, and understanding basic first aid can be the difference between life and death,” stated Mr. William, CEO of The QuickFix Learning Hub. Hands-on first aid training equipped educators with scenario-based skills to respond effectively to accidents, maintaining safe learning environments.

The program concluded with a certificate-awarding ceremony, recognizing educators’ dedication and achievements. Beyond recognition, the event fostered networking, idea exchange, and peer support, strengthening professional connections that will continue to benefit Kenyan classrooms. “This program has transformed how I approach my lessons—I now feel confident applying the concepts learned to engage my learners,” shared Mrs. Judy, a participant.

 The CBC/CBE Retooling for the Digital Teacher – Nairobi Edition demonstrated that modern education requires more than knowledge transfer. It demands engagement, inclusion, preparedness, and attention to teacher wellbeing. Participants left with actionable strategies, new skills, and renewed confidence to create classrooms where every learner can thrive. This initiative confirms Learnademy’s commitment to empowering educators, while enhancing learning outcomes, and inspiring innovation across Kenya’s classrooms.
