Learnademy at the Big Me Career Learning Fair: Igniting Dreams Through Mentorship and EdTech

A Day of Discovery and Inspiration

On a bright Saturday morning in September 2024, the Kasarani Sports Complex buzzed with excitement as over 1,000 children—some in school uniforms, others dressed as doctors, pilots, engineers, and artists—flooded in for the inaugural Big Me Career Learning Fair. Hosted by ActionAid Kenya, the event was more than just a career fair; it was a launchpad for dreams, a space where young minds could touch, question, and imagine their futures.

For Learnademy, a leading EdTech platform committed to easy, convenient, accessible, and affordable online learning, this was more than just an exhibition—it was a mission. As proud sponsors, we joined hands with educators, professionals, and parents to demystify career paths, emphasize the power of course and subject choices, and showcase how digital learning tools can bridge gaps in education.

The air was electric—children clustered around booths, wide-eyed as they chatted with aviators from SkyCraft, doctors from Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, and IT experts. Some scribbled notes; others glued cut-out images onto vision boards, mapping out futures they had only just discovered were possible.

This is how Learnademy contributed to that magic—and why early career mentorship, guided course and subject selection, and EdTech are keys to unlocking Kenya’s next generation of innovators, leaders, and changemakers.

Why Learnademy Joined the Big Me Career Learning Fair

We knew we had to be there when we first heard about the Big Me Career Learning Fair. Not just to set up a booth but to engage, inspire, and listen. Three core beliefs drove our participation:

1. Career Mentorship Should Start Early

Many children grow up with limited exposure to the vast array of careers available to them. Some assume their options are confined to the professions they see daily—teachers, nurses, shopkeepers. But at the Big Me Fair, learners met accountants who were also models, teachers who painted murals, and engineers who coded apps. These interactions shattered stereotypes and expanded what they believed was possible.

At Learnademy, we recognize that career awareness isn’t a high-school conversation—it starts now. The earlier a child visualizes their future, the more intentional they can be in their education and making it a reality.

2. Subject Choices Shape Futures—Often Earlier Than We Think

A 14-year-old choosing between Biology and Business Studies might not realize they’re making a decision that could steer them toward medicine or entrepreneurship. Yet, without guidance, many learners pick subjects based on peer influence or short-term ease rather than long-term aspirations.

At our booth, we helped learners (and their parents) connect the dots between subjects and careers. We shared resources on how STEM opens doors to tech and engineering, how languages enhance careers in diplomacy or media, and why creative arts are just as valuable as sciences in a rapidly evolving job market. Our Career Wheel was just the best tool where learners enjoyed taking a spin to reveal what subject combinations were needed for various professions.

3. EdTech Empowers Learners Beyond Classroom Walls

Not every child can access career fairs, private tutors, or expensive learning resources. But with affordable digital tools, we can democratize access to quality education. At the fair, we demonstrated how Learnademy’s platform helps learners:

  1. Master complex subjects with unlimited resources
  2. Explore career-aligned content beyond textbooks
  3. Build confidence through self-paced learning

For many parents, this was a lightbulb moment—realizing that quality learning resources don’t have to be out of reach.

How Learnademy Engaged with Young Dreamers

Our booth wasn’t just a display but a conversation hub. Here’s how we made an impact:

1. Career Mapping Sessions

We used simple visual guides and our career wheel to show learners how subjects like Math, Geography, or Literature link to careers in engineering, environmental science, or publishing. One 12-year-old, initially convinced he “wasn’t a math person,” left excited after realizing that coding games required the same problem-solving skills as his favorite math puzzles.

2. Interactive Demos

Kids (and even a few curious parents!) tried out Learnademy’s app, exploring science tutorials and self-marking quiz challenges.

3. Parent-Teacher Conversations

Many parents asked: “How do I support my child’s career interests when I don’t understand them myself?” We shared tips on the following:

  1. Encouraging curiosity (e.g., online learning tools)
  2. Balancing passions with practicality (e.g., pairing Arts with Business)
  3. Using free/affordable tools (like Learnademy) to supplement school

Mentorship Triggers Awareness” – Learnademy CEO on Why This Matters

Mentoring learners from a young age is critical to trigger awareness of career aspirations and choices. The Big Me Career Learning Fair resonated with our vision of empowering users through online learning solutions. We are at the forefront of providing affordable, accessible resources—because strong academic performance is the foundation of successful careers.

Muliande Alex, Learnademy’s CEO, captured our mission perfectly. His words echoed what we saw that day: a child who understands their potential is unstoppable.

The fair reinforced a truth: career success isn’t just about grades—it’s about guidance.

How Mentorship Changes Trajectories

  1. Children with early career exposure are more motivated in school.
  2. Meeting diverse professionals reduces “impostor syndrome” (e.g., “People like me don’t become pilots.”).

EdTech: The Bridge to Equal Opportunities

In a country where rural schools lack labs and private tutors are costly, EdTech is a game-changer. Learnademy’s role:

  1. Replacing fear with confidence through self-paced learning
  2. Connecting dots between classwork and careers
  3. Giving parents/teachers affordable support tools
  4. Enabling data-driven decision-making through analytics

Conclusion: This Is Only but the Beginning

As the fair wound down, the energy didn’t fade—it multiplied. Kids clutched vision boards; parents exchanged contacts with mentors; teachers brainstormed how to bring career talks to classrooms. Learnademy left more committed than ever to:

  1. Expanding free learning resources
  2. Advocating for early career guidance
  3. Returning to Big Me 2025—bigger and bolder!

Because when a child says,

I didn’t know I could do that,”

Our job is to reply:

Oh yes, you can—and here’s how.
